About Us
Pathways to Freedom approaches support as a connected, community led process not a one time referral or a single service response. Building on its roots as a Peer Recovery Community Organization in the Twin Cities, Pathways brings together peer-led recovery mentorship, culturally responsive mental-health support, Re-entry guidance, practical resource navigation, community education, and advocacy. This integrated approach recognizes that substance use, mental-health concerns, justice involvement, housing, health care, employment, and safety can overlap in people’s lives. What distinguishes Pathways is its commitment to pair immediate, person-centered support with work that addresses the conditions shaping those challenges. The organization states that its services are grounded in lived experience, cultural understanding, trauma-informed care, and trust particularly in support of BIPOC community members while also engaging systems such as housing, health care, the legal system, and economic opportunity. Rather than defining people by a diagnosis, past involvement with the justice system, or a crisis, Pathways meets individuals as whole people with strengths, goals, identities, and the right to help shape their own path toward stability, healing, and community connection.
Our Story
Pathways to Freedom began as the Pathways to True Freedom Foundation, a Peer Recovery Community Organization (RCO) serving justice-involved individuals and people navigating substance use and mental health challenges in the Twin Cities. Through years of direct service, peer mentorship, and deep community relationships, we earned something that cannot be manufactured: trust.
That trust is the foundation of who we are today.
Our Evolution
We changed our name and expanded our mission because our community’s needs demanded it. The people we serve don’t experience substance use, incarceration, or mental health struggles as isolated issues. They experience them as the compounded result of systemic racism, disinvestment, and inequity. So we evolved from a peer recovery organization into a comprehensive social justice and health equity organization one built to address root causes, not just symptoms.
